DENIC now allows "ß" for .DE domains
Ongoing Sunrise phase at InterNetX until 11/15/2010, 16:59 (CET), for owners of existing domain names with "ss"
REGENSBURG, GERMANY, October 31, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Owners of .DE domains containing the letter sequence "ss" that were registered at InterNetX before 10/26/2010, 3:00 p.m. (CEST), can now apply to register the corresponding .DE domain names with "ß" in the three- week Sunrise phase, running from 10/26/2010, 4:00 p.m. (CEST) to 11/15/2010, 4:59 p.m. (CET). This is now in place at InterNetX in accordance with the latest guidelines published by the German registry DENIC eG on 10/26/2010. Starting 11/16/2010 at 10:00 a.m. (CET), the sought-after "ß" domains will be freely available for registration in Germany.
DENIC is following the revised standards for IDNs with the release of the special character "ß" for .DE domain names. The step was triggered by the lack of backwards compatibility of the old standards. As there was no conclusive addressing for domains with the characters "ss" and "ß", the introduction of "ß" seeks to avoid any loss of trust amongst users of the Domain Name System (DNS), on which the InterNetX domain management system AutoDNS 3.0 is also based. Up to date, the implemented IDN protocol did not accept "ß" as a valid character, but instead transformed it to "ss" (ASCII character set). According to the new standard, domains with "ss" and "ß" will no longer be treated as the same, but as two separate domains.
